It’s that time of year again – time to renew your membership in Foggy City Dancers! 2011 was a year of transition as we took on Advanced for the first time! Square Dancing is on the move, and Foggy City is a big part of it’s future!

We held all sorts of events last year, from four successful dances, to our Pride Beer Booth, or that summertime favorite, the FCD Picnic, to some fun open house events, potlucks, raffles, and squaroling (still to come in Dec)! Foggy City Dancers is once again having a successful Advanced class with several squares of students and angels.

So, why do you want to renew?

Well, there’s the dancing – from our main club caller, Harlan Kerr, to our guest callers, Foggy City Dancers is hosting a wealth of fun and interesting callers this year.
FOUR Dances in 2012! Many produced jointly with Western Star Dancers
More fun, social events planned – We’re going to be doing some more guerrilla dance events, do some more potlucks and parties, more community outreach.

No matter what task you decide to help with, we keep a can-do and fun attitude to make sure that all volunteers are having a great time!

That’s right, our 27th Anniversary is right around the corner, and what better way to celebrate than to hold a dance! Join Foggy City Dancers as Jet Roberts calls a wonderful evening of Plus and Advanced with a C1 Star Tip.

Members, remember to bring a hot dish, finger food, salad or dessert! FCD will provide plates, utensils, napkins, and will have water and soft beverages for sale.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Because of your wonderful efforts, Foggy City Dancers did a stellar job at our inaugural Folsom Street Fair Water and Soda Booth! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Although final numbers aren’t yet in, we raised right around $300 in tips, which we keep for ourselves, and according to the FSF people, we’ll get at least a $900 payout from them, too! Woo-hoo!

Thank you to everyone’s hard work:

Steve Huggins, Dan Smith, Steve Miller, Angi Lewis, Jason Schupp, Harlan Kerr, Frank Martin, Nicholas Stong, Duane Flohra, Gregory Breese, Clifton (I’m embarrassed to admit I don’t recall your last name), and yours truly. You all really came together and pulled off a great accomplishment for the club. I hope I didn’t miss anyone – please forgive my sun-cooked brain.

Everyone deserves tremendous thanks, but Steve Huggins in particular really came through for the club. He has been a whiling dervish of volunteerism for FCD, and I wanted to point out just how wonderfully giving he is of his time and energy. Thank you, Steve.

This financial boost for the club gives us a little bit of breathing space; one I hope we are able to leverage to best advantage as we move into our Fall Dance Season.

We resume dancing tomorrow night at Forest Hill Christian Church, 250 Laguna Honda Boulevard, at 7:30pm. See you there!

Membership Meeting Report

We had a General Membership Meeting on 12 August at the Castro Community Meeting Room, which was fairly well attended. Good representation of club members, as well as observers from Western Star Dancers and Midnight Squares, for which I was grateful. We discussed the current financial and membership state of the club, both of which are not horrible, but not good, neither, and then got down to business. What do we want to be as a club?

From the discussion of the members present, there is no desire to disband the club. Members want to continue to dance. Several members expressed the opinion that we should hold a Plus and Advanced workshops for the fall season, and possibly a Zero-to-Plus class if we can get enough interest. A committee of Paul Brown, Joe Iser, Harlan Kerr, and Steve Huggins has been formed to explore locations and our club’s program moving forward.

As an aside, Steve Huggins has found out that Monday nights at Forest Hill Christian Church is available, and I have directed him to hold on to it temporarily until we explore Castro locations. Since Western Star Dancers was forced to move to Thursday nights, we are looking at either Mondays or Tuesdays for our dance nights. Tuesday, though, would mean that we would lose Harlan as our regular caller, as he has a commitment calling with Diablo Dancers in Martinez.

We want to hear from you! Feedback from members is vital to ensure survival, health, and growth of Foggy City Dancers.

SF Pride Booth!

Yes, we’re going to be having our booth at SF Pride this year – this year with a twist: we have secured two adjacent booth spaces in order to have a covered information booth as well as a dance space!

We are going to have demonstration tips on both days at 1pm and 3pm, as well as intro tips at 1:30 and 3:30 (depending on interest). So, if you are volunteering for a shift in the booth, thanks! But we also need extra dancers to show up in your Think Square t-shirts or other clubwear to demonstrate how fun Square Dancing can be!

Our fabulous new dancers have successfully completed our Zero-to-Plus class, and it’s time to celebrate!

Join our newest club members, David, Mark, Jason, and all of our Angels, Dancers, friends, and others this Thursday, 11 March 2010, at 7:30pm, as we dance and celebrate their wonderful accomplishment!

We will have cake and beverages available, and our ritual “first dance” (don’t tell them what that entails), so you’ll be sure to want to be there for this!

Groove on this – Harlan announced last night that our wonderful class of ’09-’10 completed the Zero-to-Plus list! Congratulations to David, Mark, and Jason! We’re happy right now, and we want all you fabulous Foggy Citizens to come and welcome them into the square dance community, and what better way to celebrate than to come to our Walk and Dodge the Rain Hoedown with the energetic and always entertaining, Pat Carnathan, on 20 February!

Yet even with our celebrations and new members, Foggy City Dancers faces some grimly serious financial challenges. We have approximately six months worth of operating capital remaining. Yet we have continued to work on our streamlined administrative costs by moving from Bank of America to Chase for our accounts. That move will save us $148 this year in bank fees. And we are taking more aggressive fund raising steps. Foggy City Dancers will not go down without a fight, and so the Board of Directors authorized the expense of $615 worth of See’s Candies chocolate bars and gift certificates – we have 2 Gross of bars: Milk Chocolate or Dark Cholocate with Almonds for $2/bar. The bars are really easy to sell – put a box of them on your desk and word will spread. One of our students took two boxes with him to do just that. I’m going to do that in my office, too. It’s a very easy way to help keep Foggy City Dancers able to bring more dancing to you. We also have 20 Gift Certificates on hand which are worth 1 pound of chocolate, or a custom selection equal to the cost of a pound. Spiffy!

So, we are again asking for a General Membership Meeting on Thursday, 25 January to discuss these issues. Do we want to take a more active recruiting stance or focus on the current membership and just dance weekly club and social nights until we run out of money? It’s the difference between going out with a bang or a whimper. Personally, I want to see Foggy City Dancers succeed because the aspect of the gay community that FCD serves is seemingly underserved by our sister organizations! I’m working on that vision by having dances and callers booked out to 2012. By continuing to market square dancing as a fun bar alternative activity for the gay community. By continuing to work to raise the visibility of LGBT square dancing in the larger community.

Did you know that Square Dancing is the State Dance of California? And several other states. It’s importance as an American art form should not be understated, and the LGBT community’s role as cultural memory and midwife should keep us all interested in preserving it and introducing others to it!
